CHAPTER 22
EMERSYN
We had a plan, though it wasnât ideal. If I looked too closely at any of them as we broke it down, there was no mistaking the dislike. Liam didnât want to take me, but he wasnât cutting me out. Rome didnât want either of us to go, but he would follow.
Jasper and Vaughn would be our backup. The king had given Liam a date for when we would be meeting, so they would stay in position to track us the whole day. Milo objected, and that led to a fight because he wanted to go.
For once, I was the one asking him for patience. If heâd been this kingâs target the whole time, the very last place he needed to be was there.
âThen why are you going?â To be fair, that was a good question. My only answer was that the king had me tied to Liam, not Milo. I was the girlfriend, not the sister. While both titles gave me a thrill, I wouldnât want to be the one sitting and waiting while Milo went in.
Round and round, they all went until Mickey ended it. âMilo, take a breath. None of us like the plan, but itâs the best we have for the moment. You need to be here with Kel and me⦠because if things changeâ¦â
Other than asking a couple of hard questions, Freddie had said very little. When the argument moved to the common room, Iâd leaned against the wall next to him.
We didnât talk, but he hooked his pinkie around mine, and the tightness in my chest since heâd left, relaxed. We were going to be okay. Though, that relief didnât spare me the headache the guys arguing brought on.
Rubbing the back of my neck, I followed Kellan into his room. He waited until I was inside to close the door, then locked it. When I glanced over my shoulder, he shook his head. âI just want a few minutes and no accidental intrusions.â
âItâs fine,â I said. âJust, are you okay?â
He stripped his shirt up and off even as he toed off one shoe then the other. The stained clothes declared where heâd been most of the day, as did the smell of motor oil and fuel.
The combination burned at my nostrils. âIâll be fine, Sparrow,â he said. âI need to shower, so can you hang out here for a bit?â
âI can hang out in there if you want to keep talking.â Iâd showered when we returned and put on comfy clothes and fuzzy socks. The time at the clinic had been fun, especially talking to the kids who liked dance. Weâd made it an impromptu dance party with no form or structure. âI have some stuff to talk to you about tooâbut itâs not as important as all of this.â
His expression gentled as he blew out a breath. âSparrowâ¦â When he held out his hand, I went to him and wrapped my arms around him. Kellan, like the others, was a big guy.
